its right, schools arent giving enough sexual health advice to teenagers. my teacher in school stuck a video in and let us watch it, answered a few of our questions and left it at that because she felt "uncomfortable" teaching us this. to me this is unacceptable....however there was a good talk giving to all the students in their last year called love for life...they were good, got right to the point and told us what was what but we were older and im sure some had been at it a few years before that anyways.
i meet a young man while i was in romania, in his last few months of life due to aids, i never found out how he got it but it was a very harrowing experience, one i would not wish to revisit. we gave him the money to fund his medication for the months that he was told he may live for and he was most greatful, as was his family....it was very distressing to see a person in such a condition. Sad i hope everyone realises how important this is!

I think that in order to be a health teacher, one should be required to answer student questions that are "uncomfortable" -- it's part of the job, and it's an important job. Maybe a teacher also could have the school nurse come in to talk to classes when "touchy" subjects are being taught... wait, do schools even have school nurses anymore? I know that schools can't teach kids everything, that parents are responsible for this sort of thing as well, but parents don't always think to teach kids how to take care of their health, because maybe the parents don't know, either. And if your teacher got uncomfortable, well, I can imagine parents aren't exactly thrilled to have to talk about it, either. Sometimes, though, we just have to do things that stir us out of our comfort zone.

Thank you for sharing that experience, Brook. I'm sorry to hear about that young man you knew.

Today is World AIDS Day, and since safer sex is a life or death issue, I thought it was worth posting about.

As we all know, this pandemic is still very much with us, and its threat is not limited to those who are sexually active. I grew up in the '80s and learned only a little bit about prevention in my health classes, but I sure heard plenty of wild rumors about how AIDS was spread that ended up not being true. Ignorance, in this case, is most definitely not bliss. My friends who have kids who are old enough to be in health classes have said that safer sex practices aren't even talked about in school anymore, but I suppose that's something that each school district is left to determine. Much more is known about this horrible disease now than it was when I was in high school health classes, of course, but I imagine we all could stand to learn more. You can do that by visiting the World AIDS Day official site.
