The line for the movie went all the way around the block. Bill just knew they were not going to get tickets. He was going to miss the chance to see the first showing of the only movie he had been looking forward to seeing for months. Damn it Steve not again, he thought to himself. He looked at his watch and took his place in line. Bill just knew something like this was going to happen. Steve hadn’t been on time for anything a day in his life.
Even for their first date, he was thirty minutes late. Bill remembered how he was just about to leave when he showed up. He looked so adorably cute and was so apologetic that he couldn’t be mad at him. It had been that way ever since. Steve was continuously late and Bill was constantly accepting his apologies. A couple of people joined the line, but Steve was nowhere in sight. Bill checked his watch again. He was now more than thirty minutes late. This was late even for Steve. In spite of knowing how he was never on time Bill couldn’t help but get worried. Steve had become such a huge part of his life over the past year, he couldn’t imagine being without him.
Concerned Bill hit redial on his phone. It went straight to Steve’s voicemail. He was really starting to get worried. The line moved at a steady pace. He really didn’t want to lose his place in line but he had to find out where Steve was. Where the hell could he be? Could he have forgotten about tonight? He couldn’t have, Bill had only been talking about this movie since the day he heard they were taking it from Broadway to the big screen.
As the line moved closer and closer, he knew he had to make a decision. Should he stay in line or try to find out what happened to Steve? Bill knew what a scatterbrain Steve could be. He was sure he had just lost track of time again and was still at his office working away. He held on to that thought as he dialed the office. The voicemail picked up after several rings. Maybe he was stuck in traffic, he thought. It was a possibility in this city. He could always go ahead and get the tickets on the chance that he was running late, still that was a chance he couldn’t afford. As much as he wanted to see the movie he knew he wouldn’t enjoy it if Steve wasn’t by his side. Regretfully, he got out of line and headed for the nearest subway stop.
In record time he made it to their tiny flat on the lower east side. The apartment was fairly small and, although they could probably afford a bigger place, they chose to stay there. He loved feeling like he was on top of him both in and out of the bedroom. As Bill reached the top of the stairs to their one bedroom he could hear the gentle sound of his favorite cd. Slowly he opened the door and stepped inside. Everything was dark except for a faint light coming from their bedroom.
“Steve?” Bill called out, “are you here?”
As he walked closer to the bedroom his heart began to pound. If he found him in here with another man he was gonna go ballistic. He tried to push those thoughts out of his head as he neared their bedroom door.
“Hon, I was waiting for you what…”
He opened the door and
