A bit of background for you… A few years ago I had decided enough was enough; it was time to get out of the rat race. I had some savings; let’s face it all I ever did was work and sleep. I didn’t go out, and apart from the basics, I spent little. I decided to use what I had learned and set up my own business. A small courier service- I had the contacts and I knew where to get the good deals. Three years on and I was running a very successful business, so successful that I could no longer manage the accounts; they were more than my school mathematics could cope with and that’s when I got in touch with you. I’d seen your company advertised and the rates seemed very reasonable. I sent an e-mail and you turned up to my office on the sixteenth. If only I could have had some idea then of what our meeting would lead to! You walked into the office at 11:30 on the dot looking all formal and like you meant business. Of course I had cleared part of my day for our meeting but I didn’t know that it was going to take all day. You seemed quite angry when I had to go to meet a client. I thought we would have our meeting then you would take the books and invoices to look over but you seemed quite content to spend the rest of the day in my office. It was strange; you hadn’t done or said anything but I felt drawn to you. And again there was nothing you did but I sensed that you were not someone to be messed around. I went off to meet my client; normally I would meet with them for a few hours, maybe even have a business lunch, and they were good clients and always gave my company good contracts. But today I rushed through what needed to be discussed and couldn’t wait to get back to the office. I just had to be near you, yet I didn’t know why. I had a big office, there were two desks in it and a small area to sit and relax in. I walked into my office and there you were sitting at my desk, the better of the two, meticulously going through all the figures. I sat down at the other desk and started getting on with the rest of my work. I had to make phone calls to chase payment and arrange the finer details on some contracts and every time I did your eyes seemed to be boring into me. I soon worked out that you liked to work in silence so I asked my secretary to hold all calls; I even turned off my personal mobile. I know you noticed but you didn’t seem pleased at what I’d done or anything, it was like you didn’t even think I was worthy of a smile. After a few hours I thought I should offer you some refreshments; you hadn’t asked for anything but everyone gets thirsty after a while, right? I walked over to your desk and asked, “Can I get you a drink, tea or coffee?” You tutted loudly and stopped inputting figures on your laptop and looked up at me, over the rim of your glasses. “Mineral water in a tall glass with four ice cubes.” It was a command, not a response.
