I was walking in the downtown area searching for a little corner shop called Miss Sophia’s. I didn’t believe in Voodoo but I was so enraged by the rumors of my long time best friend and my long time boyfriend sleeping together, I would do just about anything to get back at Ashley.

Why would my boyfriend sleep with my best friend? It was almost like she went out of her way to wear those tight shirts and short skirts on purpose. I admit Ashley is beautiful. She stands 5'7 tall with a body like a Barbie doll. We became friends because we had a lot of the same classes together. Now that we were seniors and both 18, we had become inseparable. Or so I thought.

I crossed onto the end of 6^th street where a red buzzing neon red sign read Miss Sophia’s above my head. I turned the knob and walked in. Behind the counter stood an old Creole woman.

"Come in child," she said.

I began to walk past the dusty spell books and jars of animal parts and herbs.

"What can Miss Sophia do for you child?" she asked.

I looked at her right in the eyes. "I want revenge."

The old black woman stood back. "Why you want dat? Who do something to hurt such a pretty girl like you?" she intrigued.

I reached into the pocket of my jeans and pulled out a picture of my new found hate. "This bitch slept with my boyfriend. I want her to get fucked like she fucked me over," I said with anger.

Picking up the picture I slid across the counter she said, “Be careful what you ask for child. Spirits hear everything.”

She turned, examining the picture of the blonde, blue eyed girl I hated and walked into a dusty back room. The clanking of bottles and potions and the moving of the curtains had me peering over the counter for a closer look. She returned through the dusty dark curtains with a candle with the picture attached to it with red twine and a handful of what looked like herbs.

"Here child take this," she said extending the items to me.

"Where is the Voodoo doll?" I asked.

Miss Sophia laughed at my inquiry. " No Voodoo doll can contain what you are about to do. Tomorrow is Halloween, it is the best time for revenge," she said smiling.

"Are you sure it will work?" I asked looking at the items in my hand.

"Burn this at 12:00 tonight and place the bitter herbs over the flame and your desire for revenge will be quenched," she instructed. "That will be one hundred dollars."

She opened her hand out to me. I opened my book bag and unrolled two weeks worth of babysitting money.

I rushed home to get the items to my bedroom. I walked in the house without stopping in the kitchen for a snack. Anger is what fed me tonight. The house was quite since my mother was working late again. I walked up the stairs to my room and placed the candle and herbs on my dresser. I took off my school clothes and proceeded to the shower. I took a long hot shower. Ready to start my plan of action I dried off quickly since it was nearing midnight. I searched for a book of matches thinking about how Ashley enticed my boyfriend into her bed. I knew she was after him all along.
