My best friend Lisa had asked me to watch her house and pets for a week while she was away on business in the Big Apple. I was excited because she had a great house on the lake and my apartment in town was small and the closest thing I had to a waterfront view was the ditch behind my building. Since I had been under a lot of stress at work, I decided this was a perfect opportunity to take my vacation. A week by the lake was just what I needed. I arrived at Lisa’s house in time to get any last minute instructions about the animals and their routines. When she started to list the daily needs of her two Basset hounds, Voltaire and Robespierre, I wondered if I was in over my head. “There is the list of emergency numbers should either of the babies get sick,” Lisa said pointing to where she had placed it on the fridge. “Underneath is a schedule for their exercise and meal times-its important to stick to this or else they can have issues.” “Issues?” I asked afraid of the answer. “They’ll shit the floor, or they might puke. Anything kinky in their routine can make them lethargic or hyper, I never know which one it’ll be.” Lisa said. “Oh. I’ll see they stick to their schedule,” I said. I looked over at the two Bassets. How could such cute creatures be so much trouble? I was glad I had plush animals. They don’t drop loads on the floor if you forget to walk them. “One last thing, I know this sounds stupid but the boys like to watch Animal Planet. They really enjoy the animal cop shows and the Pet Psychic, but if you get bored, they seem to like Law and Order, too. I usually leave it on for them during the day or when I’m not here,” she said. “Are you joking?” I refused to believe the two dogs gave a hoot about the TV. “I know, I know, but seeing other animals and people on TV is comforting to them when they are alone.” Lisa scratched the two dogs heads and gave them kisses. “I guess Old Yellar would be a bad choice?” I said. I was having trouble keeping a straight face. “Definitely, that’s too emotional,” she said. Voltaire bellowed and covered his eyes with his paw as if he understood the conversation. “See what I mean?” I was trying not to laugh. I figured if I did she would sic the long eared slobber factories on me and I’d have to get a rabies shot. I decided a tactful reply would be in my best interest. “You better get going or you’ll miss your flight,” I said. “Crap, you’re right. Any questions before I go?” she asked. “No and I’ll call you if anything comes up. Now get going or you’ll be walking to New York,” I said guiding her towards the door. Voltaire, Robespierre, and I stood on the porch as she drove off. After her car rounded the driveway’s bend, I turned to the fur babies at my heels. “Lets go see what’s on the tube,” I said opening the door for them to go inside. The two of them waddled their chubby forms through the door and made their way to the spot in front of the TV set up for them. It was complete with chew toys, a plush blanket, and pillows.
