Looks like it will be another Blockbuster night for me, I thought. I walked into the rental place with my head hung low. The last thing I wanted was to run into anyone from campus, all I wanted was to grab a movie and get out. I completely avoided the romance section and headed straight for horror. With any luck I would find a movie where the person that gets slaughtered looks just like my ex Lauren. I spent several minutes browsing through the titles, but nothing struck my interest. Frustrated, I walked over to check out the new releases. I was busy deciding between a tearjerker and a comedy when I heard a voice from behind me. “Melissa? Is that you?” I turned around and got hit head on with the most beautiful pair of blue eyes. It was like looking into an endless sky. I tried to regain my composure and appear cool. “I’m sorry, do I know you?” I asked embarrassed. She chuckled with amusement and smiled. Her smile was so bright and warm. I wished I had actually put some thought into what I had worn out of the house. I searched my mind furiously, trying to remember from where I knew her but all I drew were blanks. Sensing my awkwardness she filled in the gap. “You probably don’t recognize me,” she said. “I’ve changed a lot in the last couple of years.” She paused, probably hoping those hints would help but I was still at a loss. “I was a lot different in high school.” That’s when it hit me. It was Shirley James. We had been in student council together. High School seemed so long ago, so much had happened for both of us since then. I was surprised that she remembered who I was. We were never really friends, just acquaintances. “Shirley, of course,” I blurted out before she went on any further. It got even more awkward as she leaned in to hug me. Her friendliness took me by surprise but I let her embrace me and I casually patted her lightly on the back. “Aww, Melissa, you do remember me.” She held on to my hands as she continued to talk. “So you have to tell me everything. Are you going to school here? What’s your major? Are you seeing anyone?” She was bombarding me with questions. It was almost too much for me. She had definitely come a long way from the quiet and reserved girl she used to be. Usually I would have been put off by such an aggressive approach but coming from her I found it to be cute. I laughed as she rambled on, not letting me answer any of her questions. Instead she went on about all the things she had been doing, how she had just transferred to this school, and how she had gone from ugly duckling to swan in her first year at university. We must have stood at the same spot for nearly an hour. After a while I asked her if she would like to walk over to the café next door and catch up instead of standing in the middle of the rental store. That’s when she turned beet red. She started playing with her hair and her fingers. She was acting as if I had just asked to see her naked, which I really wanted to. “I…I…I can’t,” she stuttered. “I gotta go…” She started to back away from me. “Wait,” I said. “Shirley, hold on.” I caught up to her. “If you can’t it’s cool, but |
