You dipped your hand in and pulled the shining from the sea. It glittered on your fingertips and trailed down like a veil of stars, crystals, and spidersilk with dew. You brushed it to your lips, nudged the very tip of your tongue across its satin surface, the water parting at the intrusion, the sun brilliant and painful as it etched across every curve your tongue took along every separate grain of salt. My lips parted in jealousy of the sea, my tongue ached for the salty pulse gathered there at the base of your jaw: Unaware of me, you drank the sea and delicately ran your hands down the sleek, moist backs of the beached mermaids.
