She’d teased him for as long as he could remember. As a small boy it was with monsters that circled here and ran to there, that tickled him here and bit him there. It had never been sexual, though she’d changed his nappy a time or two. As he got older the teasing changed, more oriented to exaggerating his prowess than physical contact. “I’d like to see you do better!” he’d say and she’d respond with, “I just might!” He enjoyed her company and the repartee. Often he wandered around to her house to say hello and drink lemonade. Sometimes there’d be things to do, weeding the flower bed or raking up leaves, what ever the job they did it together, sharing the work and each other’s company. “How did you go on Saturday?” she’d ask and he’d say, “We won by two goals.” “Is that all?” she’d ask. “I’d like to see you do better.” “I just might,” and they’d laugh. Then she’d ask, “How many goals did you kick,” and he’d tell her. “Is that all?” she’d say. “I’d like to see you do better,” he’d respond. “I just might.” They’d laugh and sometimes he’d say, “Well, why don’t you?” “Girls aren’t allowed to play football,” she’d say, a broad grin across her face. “OK!” and they’d continue their task. One day he was there drinking lemonade as they contemplated a job for the day. She’d thought of calling a carpenter but he thought he could do it. Her bed was rickety and she was worried it would collapse. Together they lifted the mattress with the quilt and sheets still on and stood it on its side against the wall. Then they looked at the bed, pushing it and looking at the joints. It didn’t take long to see the screws loose and the nuts on the bolts that needed tightening. She went to get a shifting spanner and screwdrivers while he continued to test the bed joints. When she returned he knew what to do. “This bolt needs two nuts,” he said and her eyebrows were raised as she listened. “We’ll tighten the first nut and then tighten another on top of it so it won’t ever move.” “Hmm, a bolt with two nuts, how very interesting!” she said. Then he continued. “All the screws are loose, they need to be tight. This joint looks like it hasn’t had a screw for ages.” She smiled broadly, he blushed and showed her how the wood was sitting in the metal. “You know a lot about screws do you?” she asked. He blushed again and they laughed. “Spanner please,” he said as he bent over the corner of the bed, providing her with a welcome view. He found it difficult working between the slats on the bed so he lay on the floor. Soon he had a nut in his hand and asked whether she had any more that big. “I’m not sure but last time I looked you did!” she said, and they both laughed as she took it and then went to look. It didn’t take her long, “Here are your nuts, Sir!” she said as she handed a big jar of nuts to him. “No, they’re not my nuts, too small to be my nuts!” They laughed. He progressed around the bed, tightening the nuts and where necessary adding a new nut and tightening them down. Kneeling and bending |
