I was on my way out when the phone rang. I started not to answer it, but I dropped my purse and umbrella and darted to the kitchen to pick up the receiver. “Hello?” “Hi Sweetheart. You sound out of breath.” It was Carter. “Not really. I was just on my way out to run a few errands.” “Oh,” he said. He sounded distant. Carter hated rainy weather. It always affected his moods. Plus, his job as District Attorney was unbelievably stressful, but lately it had been particularly grueling. “You okay?” I asked. “Yeah,” he said. “It’s just been a tough day.” “Problems with the Bevin’s case?” “That’s putting it mildly,” he said. “The cops fucked up on the search warrant and now it’s looking like Judge Barton could throw it out. No search warrant, no murder weapon, no case. It’d be a goddamn mistake to let this guy go. He’s a piece of work. No conscience at all. A real sociopath.” “I’m sorry Honey. I wish there was something I could do,” I said. It was hard to stand by helplessly while the man I loved was in such turmoil. Carter said, “Actually, there is. There is something you can do” “Anything,” I said. “Do you have any plans tonight?” he asked. “Not really. I was thinking we might cookout some steaks and have a nice relaxing evening. I was going to stop by the store and pick up some sirloins.” “If that can wait, I’d rather do something else” “Sure, what’d you have in mind?” “I need to see Nora.” I paused. Joseph and Nora were alter egos Carter and I dreamed up last year to put more spark into our sex life. Back then, we had no idea that spark would turn into a raging bonfire. We weren’t married, but we had lived together for two years. Things were good between us. He was a beautiful man – 6’4”, dark curly hair just beginning to grey at the temples and his muscles were huge from years of lifting weights. He was very hairy on his chest and his back.
