What had started as a sort of a joke had turned into the greatest adventure of Benji’s life. He sat at his computer composing an e-mail. This would be the last time he had to go through the elaborate process of translating his words into Japanese. He had been performing this ritual for the last three years...type, translate, copy, paste, and send. The long years of waiting were finally almost at an end.
Benji had always been fascinated with Japan...its people and its culture.
Four years earlier his best friend Kyle had suggested that he just find a Japanese mail order bride. The idea had seemed absurd to him at the time and Kyle turned it into a running joke. The more that Benji thought about it, though, the less absurd the idea became. He started searching the internet for the perfect Japanese bride. After almost four months of pouring through site after site of Japanese personals and Asian mail order brides, Benji ran across a picture of Nariko. It was a bit blurry but he could tell that she was beautiful. After he had filled in what seemed like a million boxes with his life story, he clicked on the submit box and his information was entered into their database. He sat and waited for his login password to arrive in his e-mail. The site had been extremely slow to load so he knew it could take a while. An hour and a half had passed before he finally gave up for the night. Two days later he finally got his reply from the website. There was a charge of forty-nine ninety-five for a three month membership to the site. Benji thought this would be a small price to pay for the chance to talk to Nariko. Two weeks later he had her email address.
The easy part was over. Now he would actually have to try and think of something to say to her. It was harder than he thought to find the words that could shape the rest of his life. Her profile had said that she was a traditional Japanese lady. He didn’t want to seem too forward or say anything that might offend her. After three days and a hundred twenty three drafts, he finally had the letter he would send. He introduced himself, told her a bit about himself, and asked her if she would possibly be interested in talking further. It was short and to the point and included a picture of himself. He used a website to translate his words into Kanji characters which he knew she could read. He was nervous as a schoolboy as he finally hit the send button. Immediately, he started second guessing the whole idea. A million “what ifs” started running through his head. He knew he wouldn’t sleep that night.
Two days had passed and Benji was beginning to wonder if Nariko was going to reply at all. Waiting around was driving him crazy. Her blurry image was burned into his brain. He was having a hard time concentrating at work. He couldn’t wait to get home to check his e-mail. He couldn’t eat. Sleeping was almost impossible. There were a thousand reasons why he thought she hadn’t written him back. He would give her a couple more days before he went back to the drawing board.
Benji walked through the door of his house and threw a CD in the deck. He threw a frozen pizza in the oven and logged on to his computer. He had one new message in his mailbox. Sixteen long
