An old man sat in his home staring at the many pictures on his den room wall. Each portrait recalled a distant memory from his past as if it had happened yesterday.  He slowly turned his head to glance at a photograph sitting on the mantel of the fireplace. A smile came across his face- this picture was his pride and joy, his happiest moment. He picked up the picture and looked into the face of the woman with the sleek, black bob cut and alabaster skin. "What a beauty you were," he said to himself.

He held tight to the picture and slowly let his mind wander back to his younger days...1930,a bright sunny day in California. A young man of about 19 had just gotten a job working as a janitor. He was tall, about 6'2, with light brown hair and green eyes. His arms were muscled from all those years of farm work back home in Missouri. His family had moved to California because of the Depression, the farm had gone under like all the other jobs in the Midwest. California seemed like the best place to begin again.

As he mopped the floor in the hallway of the Studio he worked in, he heard the sound of laughter coming from outside.  He could hear people yelling along with the sound of flash bulbs from cameras. Curious, he went to see what the commotion was about. When he rounded the corner, he saw her, a vision of grace and beauty personified.

Louise Brooks, the new shining star of the silver screen. He had seen a few of her movies, as many as he could afford to. Movies like Pandora's Box and The Show Off made back in '26. He was crazy about her- after all, she was strikingly beautiful and could get any man she wanted. If only he could just talk to her, his day and life would go better. He grew nervous as she made her way into the building past many screaming and adoring fans.

He stood back against the nearest wall, like a soldier awaiting inspection. Hoping to be noticed by his queen, he waited. As Louise or "Brooksie" as he called her, came around the corner, sweat began to bead on his forehead. Louise suddenly stopped when she passed him. "Hi there sweetie," she said with cheery disposition. She smiled at him then asked. "Workin' hard?" He was so shocked at the fact that she had spoken to him. He replied with a stutter,"Y-y-y-yes ma'am." Louise laughed a little. "I've seen your movies ma'am…you're swell," he blurted. Feeling embarrassed, he dropped his head.  Louise touched his shoulder.

"Well would you like an autograph?" she asked kindly. All he could do was nod.  She motioned for one of the men behind her to hand her something. A thin faced man behind her handed over something the size of a post card.  She then took a pen and asked, "Who do I say this is to?" The boy stood motionless then replied. "Matthew." He took a breath, "The name is Matthew." Louise jotted something down on the piece of paper and handed it to him. "There ya go sugar," she said, her Kansas accent somewhat noticeable. Matthew looked at the photograph and smiled. It read, "To Matthew from Louise...May all you hope for in life come true."

Louise leaned over and kissed his cheek. Her lips were soft. She smelled sweet like honeysuckle. "See you later."  She continued on down the hall to her dressing room.  Matthew went to the coat room to put his
