Kate knew that sleeping with a celebrity could cost her her job, but who could say no to one night with perfection? Kate knew that most people would kill for her job. Film premieres, interviewing celebrities, swanning off on press trips to LA and so on. ' It's a tough life,' she thought smiling. She often attempted to convince her friends that working on a glossy magazine meant hard graft, obscene hours, and very frazzled nerves every time she had to interview Tom Cruise. Oddly enough though, she found that sympathy was in short supply.
Secretly of course, Kate knew she was lucky. She still got a kick when she spotted her name on the film posters, even though she was used to working face to face with people her friends would give their eyeteeth just to meet. So it was another day, another interview, and Kate’s main concern was to make his bloke sound interesting enough. Although he was relatively unknown, her editor thought he was full of western promise. Kate had watched a preview tape of his new drama, and he was sexy in a rugged, Rufus Sewell sort of way. But Kate had met Brad Pitt the week before and was still recovering.
Tim, the man in question, lolled on a squashy settee. Usually, all that Kate managed to squeeze out of the actor types were guarded sound bites. But Tim was confessing that, when he was little, he'd get flushed into the sky. Despite having to focus on the interview, Kate found herself thinking, 'mile-high club'. Looking at him afresh, she realized that his sexy, choc lately eyes were sizing her up.
His good looks were unconventional. Raven hair flicked onto his strong, angular face, and a smattering of dark stubble covered his chin. As he spoke, Kate stared at his full, sensuous lips. She was so transfixed by that luscious, kissable mouth that she forgot to plan her next question. Yet the pause wasn't awkward. Tim started questioning Kate, surprising, as actors usually loved nothing better than prating on about themselves. But Tim was guessing her age and star sign, and quizzing her on her ambitions. She had to wrestle to get him back on track about his newfound sex symbol status.
Tim's agent poked her enormous nose into the room and jabbed at her watch, “I have three other journalists waiting to talk to Tim, ”she snapped, “You've already overrun.”
Kate nodded and slipped her tape recorder into her bag. But then she paused, Desperate to ask one last question that wasn't on her list. “So,” she said, “are you married?”
“No. I'm single,” he replied smiling. Then, the smile faded, “Single with a girlfriend.”
Back at the office, Kate's editor pounced, “Is he gorgeous enough for a four-page feature?” she asked, her beady eyes narrowing.
“Oh yes,” said Kate, “Believe me. He's incredible.”
Her editor gave her a stern look. ‘Never touch the talent ' was the magazine's unwritten rule. Kate had known a colleague to be 'let go' shortly after confessing to a quickie in the dressing room with a member of a band. “We're professionals here,” the editor had told the remaining staff. “Remember you're representing the magazine. There's no way I’ll let anyone jeopardize our reputation.”
Thinking of Tim's girlfriend made Kate forget about him anyway, until later at least when she was writing up the interview. As she listened to his voice on her tape, she picked up on something that hadn't registered at the time. They were flirting. Banter flew thick and fast, their voices full of suppressed
