It was a dark and chilly October morning as Callista walked down the street to work. Many different colored leaves blew past her on the sidewalk and she couldn't help but smile. She DID love the fall. She pulled her scarf up to her face, reveling in its softness.
She was a stunning woman of Greek descent, with jet-black hair and bright emerald green eyes, with olive skin. She was slender, but not without those curves which would delight just about any man.
Callista stepped off the curb and crossed the street to her bakery. She loved this small town that had become her home. Her parents lived in the city, but she found it too stuffy for her tastes, and her little shop seemed to do well here. She set down her large purse as she unlocked the door. The neighborhood’s stray cat rubbed against her leg. “Hi Kitty,” she chirped as she knelt down to stroke it before she entered her little shop.
She set to work, and as time few by, the smells of her delicious pastries and bread filled the little shop. 'This must be a good day,' she thought to herself, 'I can feel it.'
The shop was normally busy, and today was no exception, since it was cold more often now, people tended to stop in the warm, cozy shop for coffee and a delicious bite of something sweet. Callista looked to her friend and employee, Hayden, a blond bubbly girl who worked the front counter.
“What time is it?” she asked as she stretched her lean body. She was a little tired and wanted to go home. “It’s almost 7:30, could I possibly head home? David has something special planned.” Hayden looked expectantly at her boss.
Callista smirked. Those two had been almost inseparable since they'd met, and it seemed even more so now that they'd been married this summer. Not that she was jealous, more envious of their happy situation. Nonetheless, she was more than happy to let her friend go home for the evening.
“Of course.” She smiled, “You can't keep him waiting.” She laughed and threw a piece of biscotti at Hayden. Both girls giggled.
“Thanks Cally, I owe you one.” Hayden used her friend’s pet name as she picked up her bag and coat. The bell on the door jingled as she flew out onto the street.
It was now raining, and the store was quiet. Callista walked up to one of the windows and touched the glass, looking out on the rainy street. She sighed as she noticed the flour on her hand. “Back to work,” she muttered to herself and began her closing duties before she locked up.
As she was just finishing wiping down the counters, she heard the familiar jingling of the doorbells. She looked up at the clock. It was about ten minutes to close and she'd been hoping to get out on time, but business was business. Cally rounded the corner and saw a pair of masculine hands ruffling his coat, shaking off the rain. She felt a familiar pull in the pit of her stomach. She knew who he was, not by name, but he'd been here before – usually once a week for something or other, a cup of coffee here a tart there, a loaf of bread. Normally he stopped by around noon, so Hayden dealt with him. It was unusual that he would be here so late. She had exchanged
