Charlie had been cursed from birth. When her parents named her Charlie they set in motion a chain of events that would lead her to be a major tomboy. She had always been more comfortable hanging out with the guys than the girls. All through school she excelled at sports. She was captain of every sports team she played on. She was totally gorgeous but everyone thought she was a lesbian. To look at her you would have thought she would have been the captain of the cheerleading squad rather than the basketball team. After college she got a nice job at a prestigious brokerage firm and settled into work. Everyone there loved her. She had a goofy sort of personality and was great at breaking up the tension around the office. All the male brokers there just considered her to be “one of the boys”. She would go out for drinks and hang out with them after work a few times a week. They would all go over to a ritzy bar called The Board Room, knock back a few drinks, and shoot some pool. They always ended up getting really drunk and making a spectacle of themselves. Most of the other regulars knew them and actually looked forward to their drunken shenanigans. The bartender referred to their little group as the Five Musketeers. It had been a particularly rough Tuesday at the firm. The stock markets were all over the place. By the time trading closed everyone was ready for a drink. Charlie and company decided to meet at their usual watering hole. Everyone’s accounts had taken a beating and they all wanted to let off some steam. They gathered their usual group and headed off to the bar. The five of them marched into the bar like a defeated army. They wanted to get as drunk as they possibly could and just forget all about the whole day. “Damn. You guys look like someone just killed your kitty. Bad day, Charlie?” asked the bartender as they took their usual seats at the bar. “You don’t know the half of it, Gus. We got our asses handed to us on a silver platter today. The Dow lost two hundred points and the NASDAQ closed down a hundred and thirty points. A few more days like today and we’re all going to be looking for new jobs.” “Can we get five pitchers of Long Island Iced Tea?” “Sure thing, Mike. I’ll hit ‘em extra hard for you guys today.” “I’d like twenty dollars in quarters for the pool table as well,” added Phil. Gus popped open the register, grabbed two rolls of quarters and tossed them to Phil. “There you go man. Knock yourself out.” “Thanks, Gus,” Phil replied. They took their drinks and retired to the last open pool table. They had been drinking for over an hour before they noticed the alcohol starting to kick in. Barney launched the cue ball across the bar on his first break. The patrons sitting near the table began to applaud. Barney took a long low bow and walked off to retrieve the errant ball. The other four in the group howled with laughter. “What’s the matter, Barney? Can’t keep up with your balls? Or maybe you just can’t hold your liquor?” Charlie inquired. “I just need more chalk on the end of my stick,” Barney answered with a big grin, as he walked back to the table. “I know that you just want to get your hands on my balls, Charlie!” Charlie laughed. “Yeah, let me get out my magnifying glass.” |
