.... they lay together, dreaming of each other, two friends that were brought as one by an act of misfortune.
It was a typical working day when Jane arrived to help Rob set up the pitches for the kids’ football training session. Looking out from the car she could see Rob pumping up the balls. God he's amazing, she thought and after taking a moment to compose herself she got out the car. He smiled as she walked over; she was different than the other women. She didn’t have big boobs or long hair yet something about her presence brightened his day and he couldn’t help but feel deeply attached to her. She gave him a good morning hug and the feeling of her pulse in his arms sent his impulses alive, but he didn’t say anything. Not yet, he though. She might not be ready.
The session went as normal, Jane was aware of every movement he made and where he was standing whilst Rob didn’t hold back from doing the same. Then it happened. Suddenly the ball struck the goal post and one of the corners became dismantled and the bar came crashing down. She didn’t have to look; the impact was inevitable. She cried out but it was too late. The bar struck Rob and finished on top of him. Jane acted quickly, dismissing the kids then rushing to call an ambulance.
Then she returned to where she needed to be, at Rob’s side.
“Rob, can you hear me?” she pleaded. Noticing the gash on his head she took off her top and wrapped it like a bandage around him whilst continuing to talk to reassure him because she knew he could hear her. She checked his pulse, it was weak and he wasn’t breathing. Through her tears she tilted his head back and blew warm gentle breaths. She couldn’t give up, not with him and with each breath she prayed until she saw the overdue movement of his chest. Oh thank god. She exhaled deeply and lifted him up supporting his head against her own chest.
Her breasts tingled and a slightly embarrassed Jane said, “Don’t worry, the ambulance is nearly here.”
She climbed in with him never letting go of his hand, she thought she felt him tighten it but couldn’t be sure as they were whisked away.
She stood outside the emergency room nervously biting her nails until they bled when finally the doctor came out. She rushed over talking nonsense, fearing the worst as the doctor attempted to speak calmly to hear.
“He's a very lucky man, the gash on his head just needed stitches, fortunately you restricted the blood flow so there shouldn’t be any side effects and his breathing is stable, you saved his life.”
Jane’s eyes flew wide open and she broke down in the doctors arms, crying tears of joy.
“Can I see him?”
She did better than that; the doctors discharged him that afternoon and Jane took him to her house to take care of him.
Rob was asleep for the journey home so they didn’t have chance to discuss the day’s events; she left him in the car and went to sleep on the couch where she was nearby in case he needed her. It was about midnight when he finally came in.
“Jane?”
He walked over to hear and kissed her forehead, as he did it her eyes opened.
“Nice of you to join me.” She grinned. She got up and embraced him with every muscle and inch of her body. “God I thought I had lost you.”
When she finally released him their eyes met and he leaned in. “Jane I love you.”
A firework set off inside
