Clare sank into the café’s seat and sighed heavily. Shopping was a bore and she needed to put her feet up, and think over what was wrong in her life. Sadness over came her as she watched other shoppers hurry on.
It was whilst casting an eye over the rest of the coffee drinkers that she noticed him sitting there, the look of amusement in his eyes, it was as though he was laughing at the world. Shame I can’t share his joke, she thought to herself, could do with a laugh.
She continued to look across at the stranger every now and then, finding herself willing him to look in her direction and notice her. As if by unspoken command he did, and their eyes locked. His were deep blue and full of humour, Clare’s held a sadness, that he found puzzling. He nodded his head, and indicated a chair across the table from him.
Moments later Clare found herself sitting chatting like they had known each other years instead of minutes. His name was Colin and he had blonde hair, sensitive long fingers and a smile on his face that seemed to light up the whole room. Clare found herself happier than she had been in days, and knew it was down to this soft spoken Welshman, with the twinkle in his eyes.
Looking out the window, Clare realized by darkening sky that she had stayed way too long, if she didn’t hurry she would be late and in trouble. Saying a quick good bye to Colin she fled.
Days later she found herself sitting in that same coffee shop, and reflected that Colin hadn’t been back, she thought perhaps he wouldn’t ever be back. At that moment the doors opened and in he came, curiously Clare hadn’t been aware before that he was in a wheelchair, but decided what did it matter, he was a lovely bloke with a wicked sense of humour, nothing else mattered to her.
“Hi Colin, come and join me if you like,” she called across to him.
Smiling as before he guided his chair through the empty seats to where she was, and parked himself.
“Hello Clare, nice to see you again,” he said. “Is this space taken?” He continued with a chuckle.
“Oh you.” Clare replied sniggering. “Coffee?”
From then on it became their routine, meeting up in the café for a quick natter before Clare collected the kids from school. As time went by she felt more and more for Colin, looked forward to their meetings, missing them if for one reason or another it didn’t happen. Somehow Clare realized that she had fallen for this man with the gentle eyes, and knew somehow she was going to show him just how much.
Calling him up one day Clare said that she needed to seem him urgently at his flat and was it alright to come over.
Having got the address, Clare prepared for him and left her kids with friends, crossed town and rang his doorbell. What seemed an age later she heard him shout. “Come in the doors not locked.”
Clare opened the door and stepped into his flat. She quickly noticed how neat and tidy it was, in comparison to her cluttered mess. Looking round to see if she could find where he was, she noticed the lights on just off to the left, and stirred in that direction.
Opening the door fully she found herself looking directly across at him, as he sat there by his computer, tapping away at the keyboard. On
