For Ready (Jill)…. Business travel is usually such a bore. You spend a lot of time working on the details of the trip. Then you sit in airports for hours waiting to get on a plane. When you finally do get on the plane, the seat is two sizes too small. You end up sitting next to someone that has never been a plane. Or worse yet, next to some family going on vacation to Des Moines. So I was not thrilled to find myself headed to LA once again. I went through the usual hassle of security and searches. I grabbed a cup of coffee and sat waiting to board the plane. Getting on a plane in Chicago in January is not thrill you would think. The airport is just warm enough to not need a coat. Then, you walk down the ramp, which isn’t heated. Ok, enough with the whining. I finally found my seat. I was seated against the window, right over the wing. It was supposed to make the ride smoother. Straight shot from Chicago to LA. I took a late night flight hoping to avoid the vacationers. Now, I just had to pray I didn’t get someone smelly, annoying, or that just took up two seats at a time. The plane was crowded. Kind of unusual for a late flight. I watched people get on the plane and pray they would not sit by me. But, I knew my luck would not hold out. Sooner or later, someone was going to get on the plane and sit next to me. Oh well, I picked up my book and started reading. The plane wouldn’t be ready to go for some time yet. Sure enough, here was some yahoo putting their bags in the seat, taking off their coat. But, instead of some skank, smelly, annoying vacationer, it was a fairly hot blond. She took the seat and got situated. Within minutes, the flight attendants told us the plane was ready for take off. Wow, maybe this wasn’t going to be the usual boring, unpleasant plane ride. I decided to get bold and start up a conversation. I introduced myself. Her name was Jill. We struck up a conversation. Turned out she was a teacher from Ohio. She was heading for LA for some boring education conference. So far so good. She wasn’t annoying, wasn’t smelly, actually had a nice voice, and wasn’t a snob. When the flight attendants came around, I ordered a drink and offered to buy her one. I confessed that I was not a good flyer and needed to be pretty lubed. Jill agreed to a drink and said she felt the same way. We shared a couple of Captain Morgan’s and had a nice conversation going. When dinnertime came around, things were flowing very nicely. As normally happens on these planes, when the trays came down for snack, our legs touched. That little ember that had been building was fanned a little. I looked at Jill, probably with a little shock on my face. She smiled. I smiled back. I left my leg where it was. We had pleasant conversation, our legs brushing |
