My first day back on the job was a hectic one- new students, new schedule, and new co-workers. There is no doubt that being a Professor at a well-known public university was a difficult and time consuming job. I just do not understand how anyone could keep up with the demands of this job and still maintain healthy romantic relationships; everyone else in my department was married and seemed happy to me. How does a good looking, successful woman in her late twenties lose in love? These negative thoughts raced through my head all day, but the new semester always brought back these types of emotions for me, which is why I took a year off to reevaluate my life and decide if I was where I wanted to be; but that year just left me with no decent paycheck and even more lonely. Of course I was excited to be back doing what I loved to do, but I was terrified of falling back into the same old routine of getting held down by my job, not having any time for my “other” needs. Because of the little work that was actually done in class on the first day of school, the day dragged on and I was getting bored already repeating myself four times to different faces. I recognized the types of students sitting in front of me almost immediately. There was the group of girls everyone loved to hate- they would obviously be seen rarely throughout this term; the group of kids with their pens and paper ready on their desks to take down every word I said- these would surely be at every class and bring their opinions and knowledge to every discussion; there was the group in the back that I was sure to have the most trouble with academically; and lastly the group of boys that would be breaking all the young girls’ hearts. Yes, there was nothing new in any bunch of students and I quickly realized that I might be grooming my little love slump into becoming a life-long ordeal. My co-workers were not any help either with my low spirits. There was the chipper couple who drove to work in the same car everyday, and the lucky woman who did not need this job because her husband provided her with everything, but did it to stay busy while he was gone on business, and there was the creepy, old man who was the head of our department and liked to hold many “private” meetings with different students who needed extra credit. During the next few days I started my lessons and began slumping further and further. But then the day came when my luck began to change. It was a beautiful day and as I drove to work I could see the sun glisten off the ocean as I made my commute to work; the cloudless sky made the water shine a brilliant blue. I rode with my windows rolled halfway down to let the cool, salty breeze run through my hair and just as I pulled into the spot closest to my office, my favorite song ended on the radio. I got out of my car with a spring in my step and smiled to all the faces I passed by. It was going to be a wonderful day. It was just before my last class of the day and I was preparing my projectors and visuals to help get my students to become |
